The fight against frost, in 2017 again

After a relatively severe winter, the first in 5 or 6 years, the months of February and March experienced a severe drought. This was exacerbated by a gradual warming in March and the beginning of April which brought spring temperatures. In Burgundy, they were already talking about an early harvest.

Nature returned to a normal course in April and from the 15th, temperatures cooled down. From a potentially precocious vintage, we switched to a potential repeat of the previous vintage and its morning of April 27th. Indeed, frosts were announced for the 27th and 28th of April.

There was no question of reliving last year and we decided to employ the most serious of means, a helicopter. A flight over the vines at daybreak stirred up the air, chasing the cold air from the ground and replacing it with slightly warmer air from above. The effect was immediate and the temperature, measured after the helicopter had passed, was 2 °C higher. Another flight over the vineyards on the 27th and 28th April, over the premier and the grands crus, prevented any damage.

Cooperation with others also played a part as we were able to work with 16 other vignerons with vines in Puligny in this initiative. Unity is strength, once again.
